GeekLogOk, here is my shot at making some documentation for this site. Add a comment for any revision suggestions.

Ok, here goes.

First, some things may not appear when you are not logged in. Things can me made "private" (Like photo galleries, events, stories, etc.).

Second, there two main types of text on the site:

"Stories" (Click on "Get Published" at the top). These are like monologs, with the ability for others (or the author) to comment. This can be used for announcements, reviews of games, books, movies, etc., or general rants that are more one sided.

Forum Posts (click on Forum at the top). This is more of a conversation. This should be used when you want to start a discussion, are looking for feedback on something, or don't think it fits as a story. To start a new "topic", click on "Forum" at the top of the page, then pick which forum that would be appropriate (click on it's name, or use the "select a forum" drop list at the upper right). Once "in" the forum, there will be a "new topic" button.

Avatar:
This could be any picture you like, or think represents you. It could be a photograph or you, a movie character, actor, actress, or something else like anime characters, classic paintings or just a doodle (or art!) made in a paint program.

To add your avatar, go to "User Functions" on the left side near the bottom. Click "Account Information".
You can add text under "signature" and "bio" while you are here.
Click on the "Browse..." button next to "Photo".
Browse for the image.
The image will be resized and uploaded when you click on "Save Information" at the bottom.
There are size limitations, so you may need to change the image to jpg or gif or make it smaller. I am not sure if bmp files are supported in the resizer.

Avatar Creator:
There is a flash program that can make a face for you:
http://www.todomsn.com/avatares/avatares.swf
The "email" button does not work, so you need to do a number of extra steps. If you need help with this, let me know.

The steps in basic are:
1. make your face.
2. use the print screen button on your keyboard.
3. open up some paint or photo editor program that can save an image as jpg or gif (MS Photo Editor works well).
4. you need to now do edit-> "paste as new image" or something like that (might vary by application).
5. crop image to around 100x100
6. save as jpg or gif

Layout:
In the middle column of the page, you will find:
1. The "featured" article (story) if there is one will be at the top. This might have important information, or might be there to make sure everyone sees it.
2. "Latest Forum Posts". This currently shows the forum, the topic, and date of the post. 3. The remaining stories, most recent first (might have multiple pages).

On the left hand side:
1. Story Topics. These are general categories. Click on one of the topic links to view the articles in that topic.
2. Upcoming events. Click on an event to see more information. You can also browse the calendar by clicking on "Calendar" at the top of the page.
3. Who's online
4. Poll. Polls will show up here, and there can be more than one. Vote or not, it is up to you. You can also comment on the poll.
5. Top Geeks. Shows the users with most stories, story comments, and forum posts.
6. User functions. Use this to change preferences.

On the right hand side:
1. Another list of recent forum posts, with "Topic", user, date and time, views, and replies.
2. List of Photo Albums. Click on the links to go to the viewing page. You need to be logged in to see this currently.
3. Book list for FB
4. "What's New", showing number of new stories in the last 48 hours, and number of story comments in the last 48 hours.
5. "Latest Stories". This shows each story "topic" and the 5 most recent stories in each.
6. "Older stories". Shows older stories by date, and shows the number of comments in parenthesis.

This site is great, Dan. And this User Guide is just the thing.

But could you make it so registered users are automatically logged in if they desired? Have a little check box when logging in to give the option for future visits or something. I come looking for new messages and stories but forget to log in. Now I understand why some features such as the picture gallery are there and then they are gone next time. Then they come back again.

Now to get to work on some kind of Avatar.

Under "User Funnctions" (left hand side near the bottom) -> "Account Information" you can change "Remember Me" to a longer time (currently up to a month).

What I will look into is if there is a way to change that as a default, extend the time longer, etc.

Thanks, Dan. That's perfect. I thought there might be something I was overlooking. Remember me has now been changed to 1 month which will cover vacations, etc.
